The first such place was undoubtedly in San Francisco. Most writers note 1 agree that the earliest temple was in present-day Chinatown: Both are claimed to have existed since the early s. However, whether one accepts such claims depends on how one understands historical continuity. It is not enough to rely on secondary sources or oral tradition. It is also not enough just to cite primary sources which state that a temple dedicated to the same deity or sponsored by the same organization formerly existed in the same area as the present one, as is the case with both the Tin How and Kong Chow temples.

Download the PDF Clay tiles are one of the most distinctive and decorative historic roofing materials because of their great variety of shapes, colors, profiles, patterns, and textures. Traditionally, clay tiles were formed by hand, and later by machine extrusion of natural clay, textured or glazed with color, and fired in high-temperature kilns. The unique visual qualities of a clay tile roof often make it a prominent feature in defining the overall character of a historic building.

The significance and inherently fragile nature of historic tile roofs dictate that special care and precaution be taken to preserve and repair them. Clay tile was a popular roofing material for residential structures during the Romanesque Revival period. Clay tile has one of the longest life expectancies among historic roofing materials—generally about years, and often several hundred. Yet, a regularly scheduled maintenance program is necessary to prolong the life of any roofing system.

A complete internal and external inspection of the roof structure and the roof covering is recommended to determine condition, potential causes of failure, or source of leaks, and will help in developing a program for the preservation and repair of the tile roof. Before initiating any repair work on historic clay tile roofs, it is important to identify those qualities important in contributing to the historic significance and character of the building.

This Brief will review the history of clay roofing tiles and will include a description of the many types and shapes of historic tiles, as well as their different methods of attachment.

Tribes on the coast of northwest California, like the Miwok , Yurok , and Yokut , had contact with Russian explorers and seafarers in the late 18th century. The Spanish built 20 additional missions in California.

Gasworks were built in the larger eastern American cities, but there was no gas industry in the West, however. In San Francisco, street lighting was available only on Merchant Street, in the form of oil lamps. Eastland, an engineer and clerk at the foundry, joined them in gathering as much information on gas making as they could find.

Just as a bicycle begins to get really rolling, a huge lookout balloons pavement out onto a bluff on the left, affording a panoramic view over the famous Okanagan valley, heart of B. It is a kilometre long continuation that same rift which the Columbia River breaks into some kilometres south of here and follows down the length of Washington state. Twisting its way past this viewpoint, the rift eventually peters out in dendritic fractures north beyond the Trans-Canada Highway.

Below the view-point lies the nine-mile length of international Lake Osoyoos, speared by spits and pinched nearly in half, its surface slashed by ski-boat wakes and spotted by sails.

Timeline of Bakersfield, California Archaeological evidence indicates the presence of Native American settlements dating back thousands of years. Owing to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the region, however, the Yokuts remained largely isolated until after the Mexican War of Independence , when Mexican settlers began to migrate to the area. Following the discovery of gold in California in , settlers flooded into the San Joaquin Valley. In , gold was discovered along the Kern River in the southern Sierra Nevada , and in , oil was discovered in the valley.

The area was subject to periodic flooding from the Kern River, which occupied what is now the downtown area, and experienced outbreaks of malaria.
